What is kidney failure?
The kidneys are responsible for detoxifying the blood by filtering waste (toxins) produced by the body, maintaining water and electrolyte balance, producing hormones, regulating blood pressure and vitamin D, and helping in the creation of red blood cells.
Kidney disease can present itself in two forms: chronic kidney failure and acute kidney failure.
Chronic kidney failure is the result of a slow and insidious process that develops over months or even years. The symptoms don't necessarily raise suspicion at first, which means that by the time the disease is diagnosed, the kidneys of the animal are already not functioning properly. Chronic kidney disease is unfortunately irreversible for this reason.
Acute kidney failure occurs suddenly and may be linked to severe dehydration, urinary obstruction, ingestion of a toxic substance, or bacterial infection, for example. The symptoms are therefore circumstantial and sudden.
Most acute kidney injuries can be treated if action is taken quickly, but they must be considered emergencies.
Sometimes, acute kidney diseases may cause long-term damage to the kidneys if not treated quickly enough or if the kidney damage is too severe unfortunately.
What are the symptoms of kidney failure?
- blood in the urine;
- vomiting;
- general weakness;
- increased urination (even at night);
- excessive thirst;
- bad breath;
- mouth ulcers;
- reduced mobility;
- stooped posture;
- muscle weakness;
- loss of balance;
- convulsions;
- swollen legs or other body parts due to water retention;
- blood in the eyes;
- retinal detachments;
- high blood pressure;
- anemia (decreased red blood cell production);
- dehydration;
- change in kidney size;
- endocrine disorders.
What are the possible causes of kidney failure?
- chronic kidney failure:
- degeneration of renal tissue due to age;
- heredity;
- congenital malformation (younger dogs);
- result of an untreated or poorly treated kidney infection;
- kidney injury;
- repeated urinary infections;
- renal malformation;
- diabetes;
- lymphoma;
- cancer.
- acute kidney failure:
- poor blood circulation to the kidneys due to significant bleeding;
- trauma;
- inflammation;
- parasite;
- severe dehydration;
- heart failure;
- major kidney injury;
- fungal, viral, or bacterial infections;
- poisoning by certain toxic substances (antifreeze, medications, insect repellents, toxic plants, etc.);
- urinary blockage (stones in the bladder or urethra);
- consequences of surgery or an existing illness (due to reduced blood flow to the kidneys).
