Why Avoid Ticks?

Ticks pose a serious threat to you and your pets.

Once a tick has reached your pet's skin, it inserts small harpoons (hypostomuses) to stay firmly attached for days, then secretes a substance that prevents your pet's blood from clotting and then begins its meal. There is no limit to the amount of blood a tick can absorb. In cases where the animal is infected with a large number of ticks, it can become anemic due to the significant blood loss.

Some ticks, those of the Dermacentor group, can cause paralysis.

Ticks spread diseases, bacteria, viruses, and parasites through their saliva, feces, and regurgitation. They can spit deadly diseases into their hosts' bloodstream, including Lyme disease. Therefore, it's important to never crush a tick attached to the skin, as this can cause it to regurgitate into the bloodstream and accelerate pathogen transmission. Instead, follow the advice below.

What should I do if I find a tick on my pet?

If you find ticks on your pet, remove them one by one. Never remove them with your fingers or nails. Here's what to do:

#1 - You will need a tick hook (or tick puller) of the correct size, which you can find at a pharmacy or veterinarian's office.

#2 - Take your two-pronged tick hook and slide it as close to your pet's skin as possible, so that the prongs are on either side of the tick.

#3 - Gently turn the hook (2 to 3 turns, clockwise), while pulling it slightly upwards.*You must remove the entire tick, including the head. If you notice that the head is still in the skin, use a sterilized needle to gently remove the head.

#4 - Once the tick is completely out, you can either drown it in alcohol or flush it down the toilet. Do not crush them! This could spread diseases.

#5 - Wash your hands, clean your pet's wound with antiseptic, and make sure to clean the hook and needle with alcohol.

"Having several pets at different stages of their lives, health problems are part of our daily lives. After several disappointments with the veterinarian over the past few years, I turned to homeotherapy for my loved ones. This site is very comprehensive and very honest, consultations with these animal health professionals are very informative, and the various products ordered are very reliable, often more affordable than chemical medications prescribed by the veterinarian and give good results. I recommend this site and these products to all of you who live with animals with complete confidence. HomeoAnimo is becoming like the pediatrician for my babies, young or old.
